Folks we are here with Aaron who’s been on the streets for how long um I don’t know six months six months at this point what triggered your homelessness well I had a split out for my ex-partner who I gave my flat to be with you to be with my family and I didn’t put my name on The Residency on Tennessee because I thought everything would be fine having kids never think um the registered relationship lasted 12 years and then we just kind of drifted apart we had an argument I was told I’ll wait to the dust to settle next thing you know I was kicked out um the council basically said because there were certain allegations made I made myself voluntary homeless so therefore I wasn’t a priority so basically I’m on a waiting list but they said the best bet is to actually find a private accommodation myself that accepts housing benefit oh um 12 years together and what went wrong in the relationship um I said the Mother-in-law always tried to accomplish him to me and my partner and such I said we have an arguments and that and uh so we’re living together constantly for 12 years and and we just drifted apart to be honest so she’s still in the Gaff did you yeah yeah she’s still in the house dealt with them you know hey I’m a street breakfast I’m rough I’m ready for it you know yeah he’s actually at the bedroom at the moment because he’s had a form of a breakdown but yeah I’ve ended up in in London alcoholism my parents were drinkers themselves
West Africa
the system’s broken I’ll pay tax all my life in the UK yeah all in the UK I ran an events company big company
you told me before that you this is your second time on the streets yeah how was how was the first time and how did you manage to get off the streets well it’s going back 14 years from now it was my first experience of being homeless in Croydon back then there was a lot of um organizations to help people with homeless situation there was places for people like alcoholics called the alcoholic recovery projects there was hostels like the YMCA there were other hostels run by Croydon Church’s Housing Association there was actually a drop inside under Saint Mary’s Church which was nicknamed the resource center where people like myself are sleepers would go every morning to get food coffee a shower clean clothes they would also help you get in contact with the relevant Services whether that be housed in mental health drug recovery but these days they’re all closed down due to lack of funding yeah and there’s very few resources out for people on the streets to go to we’ve got crisis but yeah again there there’s a waiting list for them there is so much um what is Crisis did they offer accommodation or well they should put you in contact with certain organizations that may be able to offer you um accommodation on a short-term period but nothing long term and the really sad thing is that there’s so many empty properties around the area accordion and and so that surrounding here like thorns and Heath and norbury and and and and places like that that they could easily solve the the homeless situation but they’re reluctant to spend the money what it needs to put certain uh plans into place to be able to to help people so you say 16 years ago when you were on the streets for the first time there was much more help available out there yeah there’s a have a lot more available now there’s only two hostels in Croydon that I know of and as I said being a single man uh I’m not priority without me there’s a lot of ladies out there here still waiting to get housed and it’s it’s so scary if they’re not going to get housed and they’re high priority someone like myself is so way down to pick in order so my best bet is looking for private property that accepts his housing benefit wouldn’t all right so how do you how do you sleep you sleep rough here on the street or you see a sleeping bag or what’s that there yeah well sometimes somebody left that for you yeah yeah new pillows nice one yeah a lot of experienced sleeping in a tent but I used to have a tent um in a park but that got removed by the council so it’s a case of now it’s like car Parks sometimes I’m fortunate enough to raise a little bit of money to be able to get a a room for the night or a bed and breakfast as such but that’s not a given it’s just like one day at a time one day at a time I go to the the library on a regular basis searching all the news agents just in case there’s something come up that accepts housing benefits and I can get the ball rolling on that front where you sleep those days it’s like last night um I slept in the car park last night
intermittently waking up every an hour or so because I’ve been attacking my sleep before because I said there’s a lot of people that get jealous jealous of what well basically there’s a lot of people first of all jealous because like there’s a lot of drug users on the street yeah yeah I’m gonna be kind I used to be a drug user myself yeah I’m three months clean now what did you mess with yeah I used to be a heroin addict yeah I’ve been three months clean yeah are you on methadone now no I’m on a buffalo which is an injection we’re basically lasts for a month yeah so I don’t have to worry about missing my script or anything like that and it’s the only thing I found that’s kept me the course because there’s when you’re on a daily script there’s so many people that want to tempt you back into that lifestyle because that’s how they deal with their mental health issues is trying to find an escapism in that which is then again down to there’s not enough mental health Outreach people to deal with the people on the street because there’s a lot of troubled people on the street as well so they get jealous of what the fact that I’m clean that you clean right and that’s that’s what the problem is yeah because I want to do something with my life yeah but some people have given up hope that’s ridiculous because they’ve been on [ __ ] for so long they’ve given up hope I’ve got two children ages of like 14 and 10. so that’s my hope all right to keep carrying on and and try and get out of this situation what kind of work did you do before you um well I was being a steward at um Crystal Palace football club um of uh Headwaters as well a Chinese restaurant okay and that I’ve been done laboring work I’ve done loads of different jobs to be honest lots of different jobs people like that all right Aaron and if there’s somebody wanting to donate or help you out contact you somehow what’s the best way to contact you well well basically I haven’t got a phone because it’s one of the things that could easily be stolen to be honest I’ve had it happen the past hence I don’t have any much valuable objects on me but I’m if you see me on the street on the street no email well it’s basically
a-a-r-o-n-k-e-a-r-n-s-f-o-n-e gmail.com all right uh is there anything else we’d like to say um well you said you used to work for like a organic homeless people yeah yeah I actually used to work for Gordon churches housing um Association which was another place that used to provide support for homeless people but yet again the funding has has all dried up yeah according Council couldn’t afford to buy themselves the new offices and such it’s it’s so sad it’s so sad that it has been my run properly and managed properly so that there’s the right allocation for funds to help with certain situations in the community and you said you made your way through that yeah yeah she’s homeless at that point no no no she wasn’t home is she she was she was basically the the receptionist and I used to run the kitchen because I wanted to give back to the community all right because you were the homeless yeah and that’s what he was like a volunteer War yeah yeah yeah all right cool Aaron well thanks a lot for the interview and I hope to see you next week cheers
